WorkshopS

Your science tells a story. Learn how to share that story by communicating and connecting directly with specific audiences. Whether you work with Lauren for two hours or over the course of several weeks, you will gain the confidence to tell stories to engage with audiences. Carve out a few hours for an evening workshop, host Lauren during a longer class period, or add a creative session to your next conference.

Storytelling Through Video

Participants learn to create their own videos by following Lauren's filmmaking formula—planning, shooting, and editing. Storytelling and moviemaking skills develop through interactive presentation, breakout exercises, hands-on examples, and devoted group work time. Participants leave this workshop with a refreshed perspective on how to communicate their research and the confidence to make movies.

Crafting Stories That Connect

Engineers, scientists, and technical professionals may often publish in technical papers or present to familiar audiences, but stepping outside of the academic or tech space requires purposeful messaging. In this workshop, participants learn to craft messages tailored to specific audiences. Based on the storytelling advice of The Craft of Scientific Films, this workshop guides participants to design technical, yet emotional, messages to apply to future writing, presentations, and films.

Writing with Clarity

For any professional documents or casual correspondence, writing concisely and with purpose benefits the readers. Instead of a drab or technically dense document, writing can come to life like a movie. Participants will learn to write succinctly and clearly, leading to documents that are easier to comprehend and a joy to read. Remove clutter and ambiguities and instead add variety. Stronger—and probably shorter—sentences with a variety of structures and active verbs will engage and excite prospective readers.

Elevating the Writing Process

Make yourself the main character. Create a story for yourself—the setting, the process, the method. Set a schedule and a plan. Get feedback. Stick to your process.
